Be Like Water.

whole and well

Well•come, kin. Pause, and take a deep, calming breath with me. In... and out... As you breathe, remind yourself of your innate wisdom and wholeness. With each breath—be here. Fully present, as we embark on this journey together.

Be like water. Be like water. Be like water.

Seated at the holiday table, by the uncle who wants to relitigate 2016. Be like water. Standing in the green room before a pitch, twelve slides loaded, six weeks of preparation suddenly feeling like a sandcastle. Be like water. And in the parking lot of a venue where I was about to walk into the best thing that had ever happened to me, hands shaking, mascara freshly checked, absolutely terrified of my own good news. Be like water.

It helped. I want to say that first, it helped. Bruce Lee handed us something real: adaptability as practice, resilience as discipline, the open mind as a daily act of will. A philosophy for when you're feeling cornered.

But here's what I didn't understand then.

I was using water as a technique. Something I reached for when I was already drowning. A coping mechanism dressed up in philosophy. And techniques, however wise, live outside you; you can forget them, fumble for them in the dark, lose them entirely when the pressure is high.

What I was missing was this: the shapeshifting was never the point.

Discernment was the point.

Water doesn't become ice by accident. Something in its nature reads the conditions: temperature, pressure, time and responds with the exact form that serves the moment. There is no ego arguing that it should remain a river because that's what it's always been. It simply responds. And it becomes.

Water is the most responsive substance on Earth. That's literally, physically, chemically true. Responsiveness is what makes it take every shape, conduct electricity, dissolve almost anything, regulate temperature, carry life. Responsivenessas. And discernment as the human version of that quality

Discernment changes everything about what it means to yield.

Yielding, under the old framework, had a faint smell of defeat. I will be flexible. (Meaning: I will swallow my resistance, and flow around you.) But when discernment enters, it's authorship.

No one gets to tell water what shape to be in.

Consider what water actually is, not just the flowing part we picture when someone says be like water: but the full, staggering catalog of its forms.

As a glacier: patient beyond human comprehension, exerting unimaginable force simply by showing up and letting time do the heavy lifting. The mountain doesn't get to set the timeline. The glacier does.

As fog: the quiet that makes landmarks disappear. Useful when you need to move through a place without being seized by it.

As the still lake: so clear, so emptied of agenda, that it can show the sky to itself. To become this kind of water (in a conversation, in a relationship, in the room where someone is finally telling the truth) is a gift. You stop being a mirror that distorts and becomes revelatory.

As rain: falling generously on the manicured garden and the cracked pavement and the upturned face of anyone willing to stand in it.

As a cloud: water that learned to float. Formless enough to cross entire continents, then precise enough to release itself over one particular valley, one particular afternoon. A cloud travels light. It arrives when it's ready. There is something almost strategic in that. The long, unhurried crossing, and then the exact, deliberate release.

As dew: It simply appears, quietly, on everything, by morning. The blade of grass and the spider's web and the hood of the car you forgot to put in the garage. It forms in the space between, in the night's quiet, right where it's needed. It is what tenderness does.

As the water inside living cells: every living thing is mostly water, carrying it not around itself but within itself. The medium of every thought you've ever had, every grief, every sudden joy that arrived without warning. Not the river outside. The river you.

ocean, steam, permafrost, aquifer, flood, steam —
water has more forms for however life shows up.

Total, unwavering integrity. Ice and steam and river and rain, all of it true to H₂O.

Each form is a different kind of power. Each form requires a different kind of responsiveness. That is the fuller teaching I’ve learned: read the conditions and choose your form accordingly.

Yielding is the willingness to change form. Authorship is knowing the change is your choice. Discernment is knowing which form, and when.

and your brain can 'be like water'.

Self-complexity. The psychological framework proposing that people who hold multiple, distinct self-aspects (parent, founder, runner, friend, the one who makes the soup when someone is sick) carry more emotional surface area than those organized around a single identity. A rigid self-concept is stone: when one facet fractures, the whole structure feels it.

But a complex self is water: loss in one domain doesn't flood every domain, because there are other containers, other forms, still intact and functioning. What the research has found, perhaps more surprisingly: self-complexity doesn't just buffer the hard things. It amplifies the good ones. A setback in one role is contained. But a success? A success radiates across the whole.

— More places to stand when things go wrong. More of you available to feel it when things go right.

The practice:
the form inventory

You can learn to read the conditions that call for each form. Over the next week, when you feel cornered by a conversation, a decision, a feeling you can't quite name. Pause before reacting and ask:

What is actually needed here?

What form of me serves the truest thing?

Then name it. I need to be the glacier right now, slow, present, immovable with patience. Or: This moment calls for rain, fall equally, touch everything, stay unattached to where I land. Or: I need to become fog, move through this without being seized by it.

Notice what your body + soul already knows. That is discernment, in its native language.

You don't have to manufacture wisdom. You have to get quiet enough to hear your inner wisdom.
